Nigeria New Year revellers hit by Abuja 'bomb'

Witnesses have told the BBC they saw body parts lying on the ground and injured people being carried away after the blast.
"People ran in different directions. There were scores of bodies - dead and wounded. They used army trucks to pack them away," a market regular called Eric said, reports the Reuters news agency.
Air Marshal Petirin said a bomb had been placed "where people were relaxing and generally being happy because of the New Year which is approaching".
He urged Nigerians to be vigilant following a recent spate of bomb attacks in a country where they had been almost unknown.
"Do not allow anybody to come and leave a bag, or any kind of object, especially when he is not there," he told state TV.
The market is near the Sani Abacha barracks, named after Nigeria's late military dictator, in Asokoro district, home to the presidential palace and said to be the city's most secure area.
Officially renamed the Mogadishu Cantonment, the barracks is still known to many by its old name.

Cassie Wins Glo Naija sings!!!
Glo Naija Sings season 2 has finally come to an end! At the end of a spectacular grand finale in which he performed alongside resident judge Tosin Martins and soul-folk singer Bez, Casey beat out Da Brodas and Rasine to take the $100 000 cash prize, a Toyota Rav 4 and a Glo Ambassadorship.
The uniquely Nigerian show opened with a soft ballad performance by the top three - Rasine, Casey and Da Brodas - joined by both a choral quartet (comprising of eliminated contestants) as well as Tosin Martins – the resident judge.
Maye Hunta was next on stage with a rather bland performance that would probably have been torn apart had Tosin Martins been allowed to judge it. The top 3 then came on stage to perform their singles; Casey, Rasine and Da Brodas performing '1st Lady', 'True Life' and 'Who You Are' respectively.
Naija Sings season 1 winner, John Ogah, performed his first single 'Tonight' and stirred up the crowd a little bit while he was at it. With that, the finale seemed to come to life as the top 10 worst singers were showcased right before Psquare took to the stage and blew the audience away.
The top 3 then took to the stage for their second set of performances. Casey was cool and smooth as he performed a soulful 'Zuciya Daya' alongside Bez, drawing cheers from the crowd. Rasine performed hit song 'Kele Kele' with Tiwa Savage and Da Brodas brought some fresh energy on stage with Wizkid as they performed 'Holla At Your Boy'.
Psquare again raised the already high tempo a notch as they returned on stage to perform 'E No Easy' and 'Gimme That' just before the winner was announced.
It was really tense as the envelope was brought on stage and handed over to Olisa Adibua, who in turn announced 27 year old Lagos resident - Casey - as this year’s Glo Naija Sings winner.A lot of people were rooting for Da Brodas,On stage, Casey was ecstatic as he received his $100,000 cash prize from Biola Alabi, MD M-Net Africa as well as his Toyota Rav 4 car keys from Glo - "All I can say is thank you Africa, thank you world… thank you my friends… thank you to everyone who made this happen…".
The show maintained the high as Casey closed with his single, which will be released in the coming days.
After the show he told the press: "I had won in many stages prior to this time; I had competed against myself; I got out of my comfort zone by performing songs by Fela with my R ‘n’B style; I had to conquer that phobia."
He added; "I intend to invest with the money and get back to school and take care of my family. I want to learn something in a music school. I just don’t want to win this money and disappear into thin air. I want to do something big in music."

Gay People Should Be Buried Alive: Ugandan Newspaper Editor
This is scary, even by Ugandan standards.
Remember few weeks ago, when a publication in Uganda known as Rolling Stone (no relation to the U.S. magazine) published the names and faces of dozens of Lesbians, Gays, Bisexuals and Transgenders [LGBT] people in the country, under the caption of “Hang Them”? Turns out the editor of that publication, Giles Muhame, isn’t finished with his campaign of terror.
He wants to spend the next few weeks publishing more issues outing suspected LGBT people in the country. And he makes no bones about his position: he wants to see violence done to these people.
“I hope basic justice will be done,” Muhame told Reuters. “Some people are even calling for public hanging and some others even want to see homosexuals buried alive.”
Basic justice for Muhame means burying gay people alive? That’s as cruel as it gets in this country, where a bill in the nation’s legislature could still become law, criminalizing homosexuality with life imprisonment or the death penalty.
For the editor of Rolling Stone to say that he’s going to continue to use his publishing platform to foster violence against LGBT people is particularly troubling, since a Ugandan court has placed a temporary injunction on Muhame’s newspaper preventing it from publishing while a court decides whether the publication is legal or not.
But Muhame argues that the temporary injunction issued on his paper ended on November 26. The court’s ruling on whether the publication is legitimate isn’t expected until December 13, a more than two week window that Muhame says gives him a chance to foment more hatred toward LGBT people.
“The interim order was first passed on November 1st and extended until November 26th while we prepared our case,” Muhame said. “The judge then said on the 26th that he would pass his final verdict on December 13th, which means it expired.”
The last thing that LGBT folks in Uganda need is for Muhame to be whipping up extremely violent hysteria again. Already, his publications have caused LGBT people in Uganda to fear for their lives, with one lesbian having her house attacked before she barely escaped a stoning.
Yet now it appears that Muhame is set to release another issue, this time with a potential call that gay people be publicly hung or buried alive. Will Uganda’s Media Council seriously be willing to stand for that?
Russia to host FIFA World Cup in 2018, Qatar in 2022
FIFA has sent the World Cup into uncharted territory few minutes ago, handing the 2018 edition to Russia and going to Qatar in 2022.
Russia's selection came despite the no-show of Prime Minister Vladimir Putin, but his clout still had an impact on FIFA's 22 voters as it won over England, Spain-Portugal and Belgium-Netherlands.
Qatar brings the World Cup to the smallest host ever but one that has unparalleled financial clout to stage the world's biggest single-sport event. It overcame objections about holding the games in desert heat and asked FIFA to take a "bold gamble."
"We go to new lands," FIFA president Sepp Blatter said.
The United States and Australia had been tipped as favourites alongside Qatar for 2022. Japan and South Korea were also in the running.
After three days of high anxiety when England sent Prime Minister David Cameron, Prince William and David Beckham for intense lobbying and the United States counted on the aura of former president Bill Clinton, none were a match for the novelty promised by Qatar and Russia.
"Thank you for believing in change," said Qatar's Emir, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani.
Qatar will stage a World Cup in and around Doha in a desert summer but promises state-of-the-art technology to cool fans and players alike.

Assault update: Lagos Assembly to sue actress over allegations of assault. They are claiming extortion and blackmail.
The Lagos State House of Assembly on Monday said it will take a legal action against claims made by Nollywood actress, Ufoma Ejenabor.
Addressing a media briefing on the issue, Segun Olusesi, the Chief of Staff of the Assembly, said the House will make the issue a deterrent case. The incident,which happened on October 29 on Ozumba Mbadiwe Road, had two different accounts from the two parties.While Ufoma claimed one of the vehicles (the Pilot) in the lawmakers' convoy hit her Nissan Xterra car, Mr. Olusesi, who claimed to be driving directly behind the Pilot vehicle said Miss Ufoma drove into the convoy, hitting the left rear of ‘the pilot ‘ vehicle's bumper with her right front bumper.
"Even if it is true that we hit her car, which cannot be proven from the video recording, when there is an accident on the road, the first thing you do is not to call a lawyer. So, it was obvious she was onto something right from the beginning and that was why the Speaker directed that everything be recorded," he said.
A rowdy scene ensued and rather than continue on their journey to Lagos University Teaching Hospital to visit an ailing lawmaker, who died three days later, the lawmakers decided to drive to Zone 2 Police headquarters at Onikan. As seen from the footage provided, the intervention of the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Lateef Junaid could not resolve the impasse as Mrs. Ejenabor refused all entreaties.
Though, Mrs. Ejenabor did not make any statement to the police, she claimed, in a letter dated November 2 and written to the Speaker by her lawyer, Obinna Ukawoko, that she was beaten and that her vehicle was damaged. She also alleged that the following items stolen: white gold necklace (N850,000), Silver Gucci wristwatch (N475,000), Pink Ipod (N55,000), Blackberry Bold (N150,000) and Channel Sunglasses ($1,215). She also claimed that her wedding band, worth £3,000 was broken and her damaged vehicle will be repaired for N595,000.
"We have our client's firm directive to demand N35million as compensation," said the letter, advising the Speaker, Adeyemi Ikuforiji, to quickly pay in order to avert imminent bad publicity and legal action.
Mr. Olusesi rebuffed all the claims, saying that the video showed Mrs. Ejenabor as she drove her car away from the police station without any visible damage and she still had her wedding band and bag while she was at the station.
"The photograph of her damaged car, as she claimed in the media, can be best described as insurance fraud and an attempt to extort and blackmail this Honourable House and the Right Honourable Speaker in particular," he said.
"Nobody touched her. At a time when the security officers were not sure what to do with her, one of them wanted to deflate her tyres, but the Speaker kept shouting from inside his vehicle that nobody should touch her vehicle." "If she was beaten by policemen as she claimed, she won't be the one to drive her vehicle to Zone 2 headquarters. Her dress was intact throughout and she claimed she was stripped. She alleged that her fingernails were broken but she refused to show the police. And if she was truly in pains as a result of the beating, she will not be able to put up such display at the police station." "She provoked everybody present, including the members of the public. She wanted to be beaten by the way she behaved but we were lucky and matured enough, especially because we were in a state of mourning and that is why we didn't give it to her."

The Nigerian female National Team, the Super Falcons, won the 2010 CAF Women's Championship that held in South Africa and ended last week. The truck you see above is what the NFF, (Nigeria Football Federation) sent to the airport to pick them up. How they think it's OK to carry these girls in this type of plantain/cow truck is beyond me.
