“Diarrhea of the Mouth” Attack At AMAA Awards Nite

Before any show organizers would call Nollywood actor Jim Iyke to present in any awards event in the future, they will definitely think twice or better still make sure it’s not going to be on a live telecast.

The actor suffered a “diarrhea of the mouth” attack during his slot to present an award at the event and was just drooling out homophobic and sexist remarks.

The actor started off with his comment about gays and their “weird” ways. “There is something wrong. It’s just wrong.” It was Co-presenter, Ikpe-Etim who cut him short saying, “Okay, that’s enough. I must apologize for my colleague. There is nothing wrong with being happy.”

The Co-presenter did not know what he had in stock for her until he told her to “shut up.” And capping it with an onstage banter, asking her to come to his room later and she asked what for, he replied, “You’re a Calabar girl, you should know, now!”

As if that is not enough, he switched from being a presenter to Women Rights activist, defending Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde’s weight gain talks accusing women of “popping pills” to stay slim.

Jim Iyke flops as host of AMAA, covers up with gay bashing and defending colleagues!

When Jim Iyke, co-host of the 2011 African Movie Academy Awards (AMAA), commented that “actors need to stick to their day jobs, including me”, it was in reference to his attempt at doing music. But his presenting skills at the award ceremony held in Bayelsa last Sunday showed the world another career that the Nollywood actor isn’t quite cut out for.
From the moment Jim and his co-host, Nse Ikpe-Etim were introduced on stage, Jim appeared confused and clueless on what to say. It was very obvious that he kept on forgetting some stuff that he was scripted to say and sometimes the prompting from his co-host couldn’t even help.  To turn things around the actor turned on his usual ‘loose cannon’ personality to some painful consequences.  Jim’s hosting was a bit unrefined and each time he appeared on stage, the audience could expect some bad jokes, sexual innuendos, or an attack on the Nigerian press.  The only thing he got right throughout the show was his choice of clothing. Change after change, he stepped out in outfits that brought out his ‘swag’ and complimented the beauty and grace of his co-host Nse.
According to inside sources, desperate attempts were made by the producers of the ceremony to control some of Jim Iyke’s utterances on stage, including his comment about not understanding gay people.  He asked why men now were tight jeans and hold purses. He explained that he didn’t understand why some people have to be gay and concluded that for him, he thinks something is ‘wrong’ somewhere. His co-host, Nse tried to control the situation by asking him to leave that subjected matter alone, and cleverly suggested that Jim meant something else when she concluded that episode by saying, “there is nothing wrong with being happy”. However, the strong headed Jim commented that he would revisit the subject later in the night but he never did.
Jim Iyke also defended some of his colleague actors who have in recent times received a lot of stick from the Nigerian press. He called out websites and blogs such as nigeriafilms.com and bellanaija when he commented that he didn’t know why the Nigerian press was becoming so ruthless of late. He also couldn’t understand why Nigerian pressmen often attack actress Omotola Jalade Ekeinde’ s looks and sense of style; when she still manages to look very good after having more than 3 children. He explained the incidence with him, the Nigerian police and the paparazzi concerning his tinted car windows.
Jim wasn’t a total flop however, he had some good moments on stage when he engaged in some witty and unrehearsed exchanges with Nse. Although some of those exchanges were not suitable for the nominees in the ‘Best Child Actor’ and ‘Best Young Actor’ categories of the AMAA, most of the time Jim could be excused for being the ‘Nollywood Bad Boy’ that he is touted to be.
The two hosts, collectively could have done a much better job if they had dropped some of the Nigerian idiosyncrasies for a more universal presentation since the audience was African/ global and not just a Nigerian audience. This year’s AMAA saw the biggest participation from the rest of Africa and it would have been better if the content from the hosts was geared towards that growth; hence there should have been less pidgin and Nigerian lingo and less Nigerian eccentrics. One of the first statements that Jim and Nse made when they got on stage was to ask “where are our Nollywood stars?” And even worse, they went on to mention some names.
Let’s see who gets the nod to host next year’s African Movie Academy Awards but for goodness sake it shouldn’t be Jim Iyke ever again!

Jimmy Jean-Louis storms African Movie Academy Awards in style and shares his experiences!

Jimmy Jean-Louis stole the show at the 2011 African Movie Academy Awards (AMAA) when he made an imposing showing like never before in the history of the awards. The Haitian actor was not only nominated for his lead role in ‘Sinking Sands’ but was also a special Hollywood guest of honour for the ceremony, along with American actor Nate Parker. In addition, he also starred in two other nominated films namely, ‘Precipice’ and ‘In America: The Story of the Soul Sisters’.
All three of the films that Jimmy starred in won awards on the night, and each time the winner was announced, Jimmy accompanied him on stage to pick up the award. ‘In America: The Story of the Soul Sisters’ by Rahman Oladigbolu (Nigeria/USA) won Best Film for African Abroad and ‘Precipice’ by Julius Amedume (Ghana/UK) won Best Diaspora Short Film.  Sinking sands won three awards including Best Costume, Best Actress in a Leading Role, and Best Screenplay and since the director of the movie couldn’t attend, Jimmy picked up the awards on her behalf. Therefore, Jimmy got on stage for five times – more than any other person on the night!
The actor comments on his experience at the African answer to the Oscars: “It was a great experience to mix with the African filmmakers. There is a real desire to move forward. The state of Bayelsa showed a lot of dedication to promote the event.”
He adds, “I was very surprised to see that the 3 nominated movies I starred in were all awarded. That justified a lot of what I believe should be done to elevate the African Movie industry. African filmmakers should continue to collaborate with Africans talents in Hollywood or vice versa. I’m also happy to see that I’m completely accepted by the African community. AMAA is also called the ‘African Oscars’ and I think the event as the potential to grow to really get to that level in the coming years.”
The actor, who was particularly impressed because the award show showcased a wide range of performers, also added that: “The world is waiting for good African movies, let’s make Africa proud, let’s tell our stories, and let’s give the world quality movies.”
Jimmy however commented that he would have liked the actual award ceremony to be a lot shorter.   According to his observations some aspects of the ceremony could have been better. “They don’t have to reward all the categories during the ceremony; they could have a pre-award show for some of the categories. Performers should not perform more than one song each. Presenters should have fewer jokes and go straight to the point. Movies clips should be shorter. Red Carpet could be more organized.”

Is Nadia Buari dating Hollywood actor, Nate Parker?

It appears that Ghanaian star actress; Nadia Buari may soon get Tinsel Town talking as she was spotted getting very close and personal with American actor, Nate Parker. Rumour has it that Nadia has recently been hanging out with some of the ace actors in Hollywood but most frequently with Mr Parker. It is however not clear if the two are an item or just good friends.

According to reports coming in from the US, the two started ‘seeing’ each other since February this year. We may not see the couple together anytime soon in Africa because even though Nate Parker is expected to be one of the African-American actors to grace the 2011 African Movie Academy Awards (AMAA) in Nigeria this weekend, Nadia will be in New York City for the F.A.C.E List Awards the same day.

Nate Parker is an American actor and musical performer who has appeared in The Secret Life of Bees, The Great Debaters, and Pride. In his recent roles, he has performed alongside Denzel Washington, Forest Whitaker and Terrence Howard. Parker has overcome turbulence and turmoil in his life both as a youth and a collegian. He was raised in both Virginia and Maine, but blossomed as a wrestler in his later high school years in Virginia. Parker was an All-American wrestler in both high school and at the University of Oklahoma (watch out Nadia!).
He has also been active in charitable work, donating his time both as a volunteer wrestling coach and a political activist.

Stay tuned for more news on any developments in Nadia and Nate’s new relationship.

Terry G Discharged From Hospital

Contrary to reports suggesting that singer Terry G who crashed his car last Saturday is in a terrible condition and may have to be flown abroad, multiple sources close to the singer-producer, including two NET reporters, who spent time with him on Monday, have told us the singer’s condition is stable, and there’s ‘no cause for alarm’.
Terry was returning home from a Friday night out with some members of his House of Ginjah crew, when his car, a Toyota Camry, ran into a road demarcation around Chemiron on Metalbox road, around Ogba in Lagos. The car was damaged beyond repairs, and Terry and his friends were lucky to escape with only minor injuries.
The young music star spent the past few days in Triumph Hospital, on Unity road, Ikeja, running different scans and recuperating.
With his manager Ayodeji and his parents by his bedside, and reporters trooping in and out, it wasn’t long before everyone in the area knew a special patient was in the small hospital.
‘He’s very okay and responding to treatment, we’ve seen all his test results and there’s no cause to worry’ a Doctor at Triumph tells us. His manager had earlier informed us Terry was complaining of serious neck pains. When our reporters saw him on Monday, he had a collar round his neck. Sources say he will carry the collar for a while.
Meanwhile, according to a statement from his media rep, the singer was discharged at about 4PM today.
‘‘As you can see, I am getting better and I hope to be back on my feet soon. I want to thank all my fans and well wishers for their concern. Their love and care is even making me stronger. Thank God I am alive and getting better” Terry was quoted to have said in the statement…

Pics of the car comedian CD John died in

The deceased's badly-damaged Golf
Following the shocking death of fast-rising comedian John Chijioke popularly known as CD John earlier today, Thursday, 24 March 2011, his colleagues, mother, sister and some other family members thronged the St. Nicholas Hospital on Campbell street, V.I this morning to receive the remains of the young man.
As earlier reported, CD John, whose birthday is on Sunday, 27 March 2011 was returning from singer Harrysong‘s album listening party in a convoy of three cars involving the Gulder Ultimate Search Season 7 winner Kunle Oluwaremi.
According to Oluwaremi, the stationed black Toyota Corolla that caused the accident was one of Governor Babatunde Fashola‘s campaign vehicles; and the occupants of the car, we learnt, were pasting posters of the Lagos State Governor at the time of the incident.
My friend drove my car, but immediately we realized a car was on the road, he managed to swerve to the left but since it was sudden; my car hit the rear side of the Toyota. Meanwhile, CD was coming behind in a top speed and uncontrollably ran into my car seconds later (an Explorer Jeep)’, the 2011 GUS winner tells NET.
CD drove the black Golf 2 that took his life, with his girlfriend Ebere sitting next to him, and a certain Joy and an unknown young man at the back of the car.
Only Chijioke died few hours after being treated for supposed head injuries at St. Nicholas hospital while others who were in the car with him are still in at the hospital, recuperating from sustained minor injuries.
Ebere had a deep cut on her forehead, which has been stitched and bruises on her body. But Joy had a fracture on her arm but the guy wasn’t hurt much‘, a nurse at the hospital reluctantly told us after much persuasion.
CD’s corpse was moved from St. Nicholas hospital to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) morgue at 10:45 this morning in a convoy led by fellow comedians – Ali Baba, Gbenga Adeyinka the 1st, MC Abbey, Princess among others.
As announced by Ali Baba at the General hospital, Lagos State Governor, Babatunde Fahola has ordered that a team of specialist carry out an Autopsy on CD’s body.
The comedians at the morgue declined media comments upon Ali Baba’s instructions but comedienne Princess who was on her toes all along, overseeing the process of corpse’s discharge at St Nicholas spoke to us;
This is very sad. He used to call me his mom jokingly and he was even supposed to go with me for a show in London soon‘, the comedienne sadly expressed.
CD’s mother did not sob uncontrollably as many would have expected but her eyes and her seemingly calm attitude would tell anyone the middle-aged woman was in deep sorrow.
Additionally, Oluwaremi also chipped that St. Nicholas hospital demanded an upfront payment of N200, 000 before they could attend to them.
They didn’t want to admit CD and other injured people despite seeing the serious injuries, in fact I don’t know what this county is turning into‘, he lamented.
NET’s efforts to speak to the management of St. Nicholas hospital proved abortive as the Chief Matron K. G Vigo refused to answer any of our questions, which included enquiries on the injury CD suffered before the untimely death. She noted ‘it’s confidential‘.
Burial and other arrangements would be announced in due cause. Below a few pictures from the scene of the accident and at the hospital…
